Graveyard shift

I work with an IT Consulting company as a Principal Consultant (Oracle Applications) and provide remote support to the clients in the US. We have a team of consultants in the US which does Marketing and Client interactions. We on the offshore side do all the dirty/technical stuff.

The time zone that India lies in gives it an advantage in terms of working as an offshore partner with US. These days we are 10 hrs 30 mins ahead EST time zone in US which means right now where it is 2:30AM Jan 02 in India, its 4 PM Jan 01 in US.

I have never loved doing the graveyard shift or the night shift which runs whole night. It's easy to be awake till 2, but after 2 it gets tough to stay awake keep working. Lesser the work more sleepy one feels. I was so relaxed during the day today and being a Sunday night I expected very little work and was planning to have nice sleep during the night. But things usually don't turn up as planned and I have a lot of things to finish before I hit the bed. I am not sure what my team has been doing this weekend. Maybe everyone was in a holiday mode enjoying the New Year with friends and family. But this is how weekends are supposed to be, especially the special ones. Most of my team mates were partying hard on 31st and I don't expect them to have done a lot of work today. Then why should I be taken as an exception and expected to work on the first night of the New Year. But here I am working and doing the dreaded graveyard shift. With 3 hrs still to go, I am already feeling sleep crawl into my head thru my eyes which are already heavy wanting to sleep.

Happy New Year !!!

The New Year is in. The weather from a last few days was very nice, sunny thought the day. Last night it did rain as if the rain Gods were welcoming the New Year. Today it's mostly cloudy, but the spirits are not damp, with the New Year’s Day.

Everyone is busy deciding or has already decided their New Year resolutions, things they would like to do in 2012 or things they would like to change. With the New Year there are a lot of things that we plan to change in our lives, be it our attitude towards our life or towards others or our habits. Some will plan to do new things in their lives like starting a new business, switching careers or buying a new house. Some will plan to try to resolve issues they have with other people.

I do have a few of my own. I have been a bit lazy and have been procrastinating things that I should do on time. Even my parents feel the same. This year I plan to do things on time and not leave things that need immediate attention unattended. Need to implement the same at work. Most of the time I lose focus and postpone stuff that I should do like preparing a document or sending out an email. This attitude of mine is not good at professional level especially the kind of industry I am in.

I have been running after fitness for years now. But fitness rules are something that I do not follow all around the year. For a few months I act like a fitness freak - running long distances, staying away from junk food and maintaining a healthy diet and then there are days when I won’t exercise at all and eat anything and everything that is edible. This year I plan to change this and try to control myself. Running couple of Half Marathons is definitely on the cards.

I have not read much lately and this is something which I would like to change for sure. More books more newspaper articles more stories. I have not prepared a list of books that I plan to read but I would definitely like to spend my free time reading stuff rather that sitting idle or just browsing the net for useless stuff.

Before creating this blog I did create a couple of others which I left unattended after a few posts. This is something which I would like to change with this blog and visit my blog more often and write more often.

These are my plans for the New Year. Hope I am able to work as I have planned things and hope for a prosperous and a Happy New Year !!!
